Open Innovation ! Where are you?

Where is Open Innovation in 2014?

Open Innovation was a mantra last decade.

By 2008 however, people started questioning it. I wrote in this post

"Mark the word BIG COMPANIES. Last year when I asked a gathering of Big Company executives on a sales pitch," we know when elephants cant stamp they start dancing, when they cant dance do they become more social or open" - the big company executives did not answer. But the real hidden intentions of big companies really is cover risks of small guys eating suddenly what they have created for so many years.
This will be short term, in my opinion, only co-creation with mutual trust has long term sustainability."

Ivy League Profs talked about it as "Innovation Bazaar"

My reaction to their HBR paper was " The end-effect after reading is - what are they saying different or new - if you are the one who have been following the open innovation literature - you will get a feeling of "heard it before" after reading the paper. The only interesting part is of course naming the article as Innovation Bazaar.
Further since the two professors are already ready with their book on Network-centric Innovation it will be interesting to see - whether we get the same feeling after reading the book as well. I hope not!"

However, the book on "Starfish Vs Spider" gave a nice articulation of the change - not necessarily in open innovation way - but generally in the emergence of leaderless organizations - A review Here

My comment after reading the book " I am love-stuck with this book! Do I need to say more"

My view has been that we are seeing three interconnected trends I call Globalization Innovation Complexity. All three are increasing but impacting each other- both by impeding and accelerating simultaneously. A phenomenally different world is emerging. I called in The GIXBang world.

Open Innovation Next has to be looked at how our understanding of Networks Evolve.

The shifts were visible - its not Open Innovation - but Co-Creation

And I wrote " I call it just the first step... Next will be the invitation only conference with your Value Net - customers, complementers, competitors and suppliers. This is the age of co-creation. Earlier enterprises realize better it is for all. This actually requires all round mutual trust and confidence in openness to explore future.Zero sum games will be failures in co-creation scenarios - play the +ve sum games, where in each others capabilities are synergized to create end value!"

Our view was that Open Innovation has to be Lean and TRIZ enabled

It has to be a learning organization

We formulated 14 Key Areas for Value

The Operating Architecture for GIXBang world is not "open innovation" but Co-Crafting. And one can become an Innovation Co-Crafter by SOUL-ALVIS-CRAFT framework.

We need to move from simpleton to scientist  to saint

We call it the Innovation Co-Crafting approach.

How to be an Innovation Co-Crafter?

"I am seeing this first time - your designation is co-crafter" - He looked at my visiting card and remarked! I was about to start a presentation on how to create Innovation Professionals to a set of senior executives from a group of companies.  ~ After I explained what is a co-crafter - the COO said - I want to create 100 co-crafters in next 2 years!

I thought it make sense to capture what I explained as a co-crafter - all of us at my company Crafitti Consulting http://www.crafitti.com/ are co-crafters. We co-craft innovation together with all the minds working for and with our clients.

A Co-Crafter is a Simpleton, Scientist and Saint - who starts along with people in a system (experienced domain experts) to reach to the SOUL of the system. He starts every time as a simpleton (IDIOT if you may - in Chetan Bhagat's articulation in his book 3 Idiots) - then he becomes a scientist and finally achieves sainthood - reaching and delivering a wisdom of the system to effect change that is needed - making the system as close to Ideal as is possible. In this journey - he creates systemic change along with people in the system.

Everytime co-crafter starts as a simpleton who has multiple lenses to view reality and many times creates new lenses to look at reality - during this adventures in wonderland he behaves like a scientist - experimenting exploring understanding through the steps of SOUL - See, Observe, Understand and Live - after the simpleton has reached to the SOUL of the system, he starts the change process needed - a change that impacts all around him. Slowly the wisdom gleaned from this becomes the new change that the system needed and experts start developing their expertise in the new change!

A co-crafter is a simpleton who becomes a scientist and then achieves sainthood by working with a system and the people in the system to make the system as close to an ideal system as is possible - He has to be humble, has to accept that he doesnt know and actually need to reach the SOUL of the system by learning to See, Observe, Understand and Live (SOUL) the system. Achieving Sainthood from being a simpleton everytime is a learning process!

A co-crafter takes the organization that he works with to the Simplicity on the other side of complexity - one has to go through complexity. This side of simplicity will keep us simpletons - I hope you can connect with being Simpleton as this side of complexity - being a Saint is on other side of complexity and exploring complexity is being a scientist! - The co-crafter takes the system through a journey of simplicity from this side of complexity to the other side of complexity, breaking and many times shattering the mountains of complexity!

Who is right - Customer or Provider?

Who is RIGHT?

YOUR CUSTOMER IS NEVER RIGHT.

YOU CAN NEVER BE RIGHT.

Well - Neither Your Customer Nor You can be RIGHT - alone!

However - The only way to be RIGHT is when

YOU and YOUR CUSTOMER ARE RIGHT AT THE SAME TIME.

This requires a MIND SET SHIFT - TOWARDS CO-CRAFTING!

Starting CRAFITTI CONSULTING

From June 1 2008, we have launched CRAFITTI CONSULTING - the brand new Innovation Consulting Firm that works in the co-crafting model - working with the clients as partners rather than the fly by transactions operators that we have seen across the spectrum.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Following is an introductory email that I posted to TRIZ India Yahoo group.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear All,

After years of experience in applying TRIZ, using Patent databases and TRIZ based patent analysis, Lean Thinking and Decision Engineering techniques such as Analytic Hierarchy Process, in various projects across domains, we have started an Innovation consulting firm Crafitti Consulting (http://www. crafitti. com).

Over past many years, many of you have asked me whether I can provide some sort of consultancy on TRIZ and other techniques that I have experimented with. My answer had always been that since I am employed right now, I have to go through the organization that I work for which typically becomes a constraint. Now that constraint is no more.

The integrated approach of innovation that we have developed happens to be unique with inputs from Lean Product Development, TRIZ, DSM, AHP, and Patent Analysis. This integrated approach or frameworks as the case be, have been developed through years of experience in applying, deploying and embedding in the very fabric of large global enterprises. First time we are offering these as solutions to the unknown and known needs of Indian Industry as we sincerely believe that India needs to be empowered for innovation, especially when the young minds are thriving in large numbers in India.

Recent work published in TRIZ-journal for example is testimony to my claim that the results are definitely order of magnitude more stronger through our integrated approach rather than applying any of these techniques in isolation. http://www.triz- journal.com/ archives/ 2008/06/04/

We shall be more than happy to share with you our services and the way we can work together. Our model is Co-crafting Innovation together and I can assure you we will work with you in identifying the right problems, generating solutions that one normally would not generate and executing these in a manner where robustness and Lean thinking assures minimum crisis situations.

Our mantra is " We do not know your problems. If you already know your problems then also we are not the right partners for you. However, if you really want to build an organization that learns continuously, create blue oceans regularly and thrives in uncertain, unknown and unpredictable times, we would put our skin in your future. Thats a promise!"

Look forward to working with you in co-crafting a future that is innovative and exhilarating at the same time. We will do it.

with warm regards,
Navneet
