The Fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, is a powerful model genetic organism that has been used since the turn of previous century to study complex biological problems. Several genes and underlying molecular pathways involved in development and diseases are highly conserved between humans and Drosophila. This has led to the development of human disease models in fly. This power of Drosophila genetics can be exploited by medical fraternity including PEDIATRICIANS to uncover genes to dissect pathways involved in disease pathogenesis and to identify targets for therapeutic intervention.
