When I took up an Innovation Position in a company, one of the old-timers asked me a question - before taking up or starting anything first understand whether the company is READY FOR INNOVATION at all!
I think that was a brilliant question? The inherent culture of the company - typically driven from the top and the legacy of the company drives how much of Inovation is part of the coampany's DNA. The businessweek article summarizes this as well Believe in Innovation to Win
